IVANOVIC: 2009 COMMUNITY SHIELD EXAMINED

Serbian defender BranislavIvanovic spent almost a decade as a Chelsea player, but he didn't win more than one FA Community Shield. His only Community Shield win came in 2009 following the penalty shootout win over rivals Manchester United.

The 2009 FA Community Shield was the first trophy under the Carlo Ancelotti era at Stamford Bridge. Italian tactician Ancelotti was appointed as the new Blues manager in the summer of 2009 and he went on to win three trophies in his debut season as the Chelsea manager. Apart from the Community Shield, Ancelotti also won the FA Cup and Premier League titles.

The FA Community Shield clash with Manchester United was the first game for Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea and BranislavIvanovic was part of it. The Serbian international started the game on the right side of defence. BranislavIvanovic was joined in defence by Ricardo Carvalho, Ashley Cole and skipper John Terry, while Petr Cech was in the Chelsea goal.

John Mikel Obi, Frank Lampard, Michael Essien and FlorentMalouda started in midfield for Chelsea, while Frenchman Nicholas Anelka and Didier Drogba were in attack for the West London giants.
Manchester United took the lead through Portuguese winger Luis Nani on ten minutes and his goal was enough to give the Red Devils a slender lead at the break. BranislavIvanovic was given a yellow card three minutes after the Red Devils took the lead and he was substituted at the half-time interval with Jose Bosingwa coming on in his place.

Carvalho and Lampard scored in the 52ndminute and 70th minute respectively to turn the game on its head before Wayne Rooney forced penalty shootout with the Manchester United equaliserin the second minute of stoppage time. Chelsea would go on to win the Community Shield via a 4-1 victory during shootout.
