CHRISTENSEN CHALLENGED FOR ‘LEGEND OF DEFENCE’

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has challenged Andreas Christensen to become a legend of defence at Stamford Bridge amidst his ongoing contract standoff. His manager told him to extend his Chelsea stay to become a legend of defence like John Terry, BranislavIvanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta.

John Terry led Chelsea to several titles as skipper and he has embraced a coaching career since he retired at Aston Villa some years back. For BranislavIvanovic, the Serbian spent several fruitful years at Chelsea and he’s considered a club legend alongside Terry. Both BranislavIvanovic and skipper Terry were part of the Chelsea squad that won the Champions League title for the first time in the history of the club some nine years ago. On his part, Cesar Azpilicueta is the current Chelsea captain and he has been a key player in West London for the better part of the last one decade. Utility defender BranislavIvanovicdidn’t win any major trophy during his national team career with Serbia. However, it must be pointed out that he was very close to winning a trophy with the u-21 team on two occasions. BranislavIvanovic was part of the Serbia and Montenegro that finished second at the 2004 UEFA European u-21 Championship in Germany. Ivanovic saw red on the stroke of fulltime as Italy beat his team 3-0 in the final to win the tournament. The Italians scored a first half goal through Daniele De Rossi before Cesare Bovo and Alberto Gilardino added a second and third Italian goal respectively to make it a dominant win.
BranislavIvanovic also tasted second place with the Serbian team at the 2007 UEFA European u-21 Championship in the Netherlands. The hosts emerged as winners by thrashing Serbia 4-1 in the final which took place at Euroborg in Groningen. IVANOVIC: LOKOMOTIV MOSCOW CAREER REVEALED

BranislavIvanovic followed in the footsteps of his father by becoming a professional footballer in Serbia. He started his career at FK Srem before joining OFK Beograd in December 2003.

OFK Beograd was in the Serbian top flight by the time BranislavIvanovic joined them and he was a part of the team that punched above their weight for several seasons. Ivanovic and OFK Beograd performed beyond expectations and they even reached the last four of the 2004 UEFA Intertoto Cup against all odds. They were not one of the teams expected to make the final stages of the competition.

A lot of teams were attracted to the footballing ability of Ivanovicwhile he was in the Serbian top flight and the defender didn’t spend much time before leaving the country. He spent just two years in the top division in Serbia before being snapped up by Lokomotiv Moscow in January 2006.

His move to Lokomotiv Moscow in the Russian Premier League was partly down to the presence of compatriot Slavoljub Muslin in the dugout. Under Muslin, BranislavIvanovic impressed at the start of his Lokomotiv Moscow career at the age of 22. He cemented his place in the Lokomotiv Moscow starting line-up as a result.Ivanovic scored twice in 28 games in the Russian league in his debut season as a Lokomotiv Moscow player but it was not enough to win the league as his team eventually fell out of the race for the title.

He spent just two seasons at Lokomotiv Moscow, netting five times in 54 games. He was a key member of the squad in his second and final season at the club as Lokomotiv Moscow fell short in the title race again though they compensated with the Russian Cup. They saw off FC Moscow in the Moscow Derby to win the Russian Cup title.

IVANOVIC PREPARING FOR THE NEW SEASON WITH WEST BROM

Although not all of West Brom’s fans will be happy with the fact that Branislav Ivanovic could be playing for them next season, it looks as though the defender is getting prepared to head into the new season as a charged-up player. Ivanovic was not a top performer for West Brom last season and fans began to call for his head as a result. Many of them asked the club to sell him as they no longer want to see him play for the club again. However, it looks like they will have to endure watching him for another season after the former Chelsea man revealed that he is already working towards having a bright start to the next season.

Ivanovic slipped down the pecking order at the Hawthorns last season following a shaky performance at the back for the club and since then he has not been able to get back into the starting eleven. He has already been linked with an exit from the club and has been reported to be courted by a number of clubs in China, Australia, Italy, and in the Championship.

The former Blues man is reportedly willing to take a pay cut to remain at the club as he wants to prove to the Baggiesson and the fans that he is not yet a finished product and that he still wants to prove himself at the highest level. There has not been any report of a club approaching West Brom with the intention of signing him yet, but it is believed that his possible suitors are looking to monitor him this season to see if he has improved so that they will try to sign him on a free transfer next summer or in January.

However, with time not on his side, his best shot could be having a bright season for West Brom to earn himself a contract extension before retiring from his professional career.

IVANOVIC COULD BE STAYING AT WEST BROM IN TRANSFER U-TURN

The reports that were linking Branislav Ivanovic away from West Bromwich Albion have all cooled down and according to the recent reports, he could well be staying at the Hawthorns next season. Former Chelsea and Serbia international defender Ivanovic is one of the names that have been earmarked for a potential departure from West Brom and has been asked to be sold by the club’s fans following his poor and underwhelming performances last season where he failed to establish himself as a key payer at the club following his transfer back to the Premier League.

West Brom fans have made it clear that they would love to see Ivanovic out of the club and judging by their social media activities, they want him to be sold s soon as this summer. However, there is a slight problem because the Baggies will find it hard to offload the defender as there are no offers coming from any club indicating that they will be willing to have the Serbian defender on their books ahead of the upcoming season.

Ivanovic was strongly linked with a move to Greek side Olympiacos and many thought that he would be starting next season playing in the Greek league but it looks like that will not be the case after those reports died down in recent times. Both West Brom and the player will now have to try to make the situation a win-win one, in the sense that Ivanovic will now be looking forward to having a better campaign next season in order to prove to the club and the fans that he still has some football in him to offer after all.

A better campaign for the defender next season is expected to see a drastic reduction in the number of fans that want him out of the club and that’s what he will be looking forward to working towards.
