WHEN IVANOVIC WAS LEFT HEARTBROKEN REVEALED

West Brom defender Branislav Ivanovic won't forget the events that followed the Champions League semi-final second leg clash with Barcelona in 2012 in a hurry. Branislav Ivanovic was a Chelsea player and he had helped the Blues to qualify for the 2012 Champions League final at the expense of Spanish giants Barcelona.

Chelsea had won the first leg 1-0 at home before battling to a 2-2 draw away from home in the return leg at the Nou Camp. Branislav Ivanovic conceded a penalty during the second leg and was subsequently booked. That booking would prove to be costly for him.

After Chelsea had booked their place in the final ahead of Barcelona, British reporter Geoff Shreeves conducted a post-match interview for the Chelsea trio of Branislav Ivanovic, Petr Cech and Ashley Cole. Geoff Shreeves asked Branislav Ivanovic whether he was booked after conceding the penalty missed by Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi and his response was yes.

The reporter went on to break the news of his suspension for the final to him as a result of that yellow card. Branislav Ivanovic was unaware of his suspension for the final after the booking and it was heartbreaking for him to find out that he would be missing out on the squad for the final. BranislavIvanovicrightfully missed that 2012 Champions League final alongside club skipper John Terry, who was also suspended for the game.
Without the defensive duo of BranislavIvanovic and John Terry, Chelsea were able to beat Bayern Munich in the final to win the competition for the first time. Bayern Munich were favourites as the final was being hosted by European football's governing body, UEFA, at their match venue known as the Allianz Arena. Chelsea defeated the Bavarian giants on penalties after they were tied at the end of extra time.
